Overview

The quality, creativity and effectiveness of Brightwave's visual design is key to our business. The Head of Visual Design is aware of and able to implement best-in-class visual design practices that support high quality, relevant learning aligned our clients' needs.

You'll have several years' experience of creating impactful and engaging visual designs for digital learning and/or business solutions and will be confident in discussing visual design both internally and externally.

Your work in this role will split roughly 70/30 between the production of visual designs for our proposals and learning solutions; and your leadership responsibilities, coaching and mentoring our graphic artists and promoting excellence in visual design. You will actively encourage collaboration within cross-functional teams, establishing and implementing processes that ensure best practice in visual design is consistent across all our learning solutions and platforms.

You'll have a proven record in adopting a consultative approach when discussing and recommending effective visual design approaches which are aligned to our clients' businesses and learning needs. You'll be aware of the issues that can occur over the lifecycle of a project and be able to take action to anticipate and resolve problems as they occur.

You'll be a confident ambassador for visual design at Brightwave (via conference presentations, webinars, blogs, vlogs and other social media activity) and will constantly seek to innovate and advance the company's visual design capabilities and reputation.

Accountabilities

  • Articulating and championing the agreed visual design approach in design documents, proposals, other documentation; and in presentations and conversations with clients
  • Coaching and mentoring others working in the visual design function to meet appropriate standards of quality so that that each member of the team has effective professional development
  • Recruiting and inducting freelance and permanent visual designers
  • Working with the CTO and Director of Design to ensure joined-up thinking and adoption of new technologies and current visual trends
  • Establishing, documenting and implementing best practice in visual design
  • Designing and executing thought-leadership activities, both internally and externally; and constantly looking beyond the confines of digital learning to lead and develop Brightwave's visual design thinking
  • Representing Brightwave's brand and creative identity in the form of blogs, conference presentations and social media activity
  • As well as these responsibilities you will carry out the role of Senior Graphic Designer as required to support projects, proposals, sales and marketing across the business.

Skills, experience and attributes

  • Confidence in dealing with clients and the internal team. A strong sense of autonomy coupled with the ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to multi task and manage your time effectively and to remain calm and focussed under pressure
  • Rational and strategic thinking and the ability to communicate this effectively to others
  • Outstanding ability to generate, deliver and explain creative visual solutions
  • Leadership - listening, learning, setting expectations and supporting people in achieving their goals
  • Ability to share and communicate best practice and inspire people to think differently and creatively about how they use visual design
  • Exceptional visual and communication skills that will inspire internal and external audiences with highly engaging and articulate presentations and storytelling
  • Ability to contribute to reputation of the company through profile-raising activities
  • Sound understanding of design, animation, video/film, print and digital using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, 3D, Flash, HTML, XML and other web technologies
  • Hands-on experience of wireframing tools (such as inVision or Balsamiq, etc.)
  • Established commercial experience in learning or digital agency
  • Enthusiasm for digital design and technology
